The Merchants Square (Piazza dei Mercanti) history starts with the construction of the medieval Palazzo della Ragione, or new Broletto, in early 13th century, for the new city administration necessities.
Around this building a square was created with other important palaces, such as the gotic Loggia degli Osii, or the palace of Scuole Palatine, rebuilt in 17th century during the Spanish period of Milan, or Palazzo dei Giureconsulti.
The square was, at that time, the core of the city from the administretiv and commercial point of view.
